CARB or the California Air Resources Board is an environmental protection agency which focuses on the effective reduction of air pollutants to protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources. The body is saddled with the responsibility of overseeing all air pollution control efforts in California to establish and maintain the best possible air quality standards for health.

To provide Californians with the best possible air quality, CARB oversees many functions which include the collection of data on the numerous sources of air pollution  in the United States. This data helps to find the best ways to eliminate or reduce this pollution. The board evaluates the data thus collected and makes recommendations on greenhouse gas reduction to improve the quality of breathable air in California. The unhealthy gases the CARB monitors include:

  • Various organic gases
  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Sulfuric oxides
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Particulate matter

Internal combustion engines are the chief culprits in the emission of these gases. Therefore, CARB has set-up stringent emission control standards for the design of such engines which are used in various equipment especially power generators. What this means is that any engine that runs on a combustible fuel (gas, diesel or propane) must be CARB certified. This certification ensures that the engines comply with state regulations on the acceptable level of harmful gases that are emitted from the exhaust of these engines as well as the fuel quality being sold in California.

In the US today, CARB has the most stringent of all air quality regulations. And apart from California, many other States are now on board with more states being added to the list.  All states that do not yet have a compliant regulation require equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, to be EPA compliant. EPA compliance is a similar federal certification for all internal combustible engines sold and used in the US. But while EPA complaint engines can be sold anywhere in the US, California and the CARB states has its own special regulations and does not permit the use of EPA complaint engines except where they are also CARB compliant.

CARB compliant products have engines that meet tougher air quality standards. Always confirm if your gas-powered equipment is CARB certified before buying, especially if you live in a state that requires CARB compliance.

Consumer products  can be ranked by their compliance with CARB standards. Therefore, a generator that is carb compliant is naturally considered to be very safe and environmentally friendly. They do not emit as many dangerous gasses as non-complaint models which makes them cleaner and healthier.

CARB strict regulation on air pollution is forcing many portable generator manufacturers to redesign their engines to meet the required standards. If you need a great portable power solution, and like the good people of California, prefer your air clean and of the highest quality, there are lots of excellent generators in the market which are confirmed CARB compliant.

I am starting with Carb Compliant because more and more states are bringing in laws around Carb Compliant and EPA. And I am sure more and more states will come on board and eventually all states will need to be compliant.

So if you are going to buy a generator today then, you should really consider making sure it is Carb Compliant.  Click here for more information  Carb Compliant and EPA and how they differ.
